A Tale of Two Statues

- The Original (1887): Created by sculptor Lluís Puiggener, the original bronze was inaugurated to express the city’s gratitude.
- Destruction (1936): During the Spanish Civil War, the statue was torn down by anarchist groups and melted to create ammunition for the Republican effort.
- The Rebirth (1948): After the war, sculptor Frederic Marès used the original plaster models to create the faithful reproduction that stands there today.

The pedestal carries the simple, powerful inscription: “BARCELONA A PRIM” (Barcelona to Prim). If you look closely at the sides of the stone base, you’ll find bronze reliefs depicting key moments from Prim’s career, such as his military victories in Morocco.
