The Timeless Charm of Varenna
There is a legendary kind of stillness that resides along the shores of Lake Como. As I approached Varenna by water, the village revealed itself not just as a cluster of buildings, but as a vibrant mosaic of history leaning against the steep, verdant slopes of the Italian Alps. The air was soft, carrying the faint scent of jasmine and the gentle lap of the lake against the stone harbor, creating a scene that felt like stepping directly into a vintage postcard.
I wanted to capture that specific feeling of “Old World” elegance—the way the sun-drenched facades of peach, ochre, and rose terracotta seem to glow against the deep greens of the mountainside. Varenna has a way of making time feel irrelevant, and standing there with my camera, I felt less like an observer and more like a part of the village’s long, colorful story.
The Visual Journey
The color palette of this image is a celebration of warmth nestled within a cool, natural cradle. I emphasized the rich, sun-baked oranges and dusty pinks of the architecture to contrast with the deep, moody emeralds of the forest behind them. The lighting is soft and diffused, which allowed me to preserve the intricate details of the stonework and the red-tipped bell tower without the harsh glare of midday. The water reflects these tones in shimmering ripples of teal and silver, grounding the entire composition in a serene, cinematic mood.
The Creative Choice
When composing this shot, I made a deliberate choice to include the forest canopy as a heavy frame at the top of the image. By capturing the sheer verticality of the mountain pressing down toward the water, I wanted to showcase how perfectly the village is tucked into its environment. I also waited for the small boats to settle into their moorings; they serve as a vital human element, adding a sense of scale and life to the grand architecture of the shoreline.
