Where the Tide Meets the Twilight
There is a restless beauty to the California coast that I never tire of capturing. On this evening in Pacific Grove, the air was thick with the scent of salt and the heavy, rhythmic pulse of the Pacific. As I watched the waves tumble over the jagged rocks, the world felt simultaneously wild and incredibly still. The shoreline here is a graveyard of ancient stone and a playground for the tide, and in this moment, it felt like the ocean was telling its most intimate story.
Standing there with the spray on my face, I waited for the sun to find that tiny window between the heavy marine layer and the horizon. It’s a game of patience along this stretch of Highway 1; the fog usually wins, but for a few seconds, the sky cracked open just enough to let a sliver of golden light burn through. It was the kind of moment that makes you forget the cold and just focus on the breath of the sea.
The Visual Journey
I wanted the color palette to reflect the cool, moody atmosphere of a coastal evening. I leaned into deep, slate blues and muted purples to emphasize the power of the water and the weight of the clouds. By keeping the shadows rich and dark, the small burst of orange at the horizon acts as a focal point, drawing the eye across the white seafoam and into the distance. The lighting is soft and natural, highlighting the rugged textures of the foreground rocks without losing the dreamy, ethereal quality of the sky.
The Creative Choice
My main goal with this composition was to create a sense of depth and movement. I chose a low angle to bring the foreground rocks into sharp focus, allowing the white foam of the crashing waves to lead the viewer’s eye into the center of the frame. By positioning the sun directly in the center of the horizon, I created a balanced, symmetrical anchor that grounds the chaotic energy of the water, turning a turbulent scene into a meditative one.
